Hollywood star Tom Cruise is officially returning for ‘Top Gun 3’, as confirmed by the makers during CinemaCon. According to Variety, Paramount announced that Cruise will reprise his iconic role, alongside producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and confirmed that the project is now officially in development.

The third film serves as a follow-up to Joseph Kosinski’s 2022 blockbuster ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The sequel was first reported to be in early development in 2024, with writer Ehren Kruger attached to the project. ‘Maverick’ turned out to be a massive global success, earning approximately USD 1.5 billion at the worldwide box office on a production budget of around USD 170 million, becoming one of the biggest theatrical hits in the post-pandemic era.

Cruise returned to the franchise 36 years after his original debut as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 classic ‘Top Gun’. In ‘Maverick’, his character comes back to the elite fighter pilot school to train a new group of top aviators for a dangerous mission. During this journey, he also reconnects with Bradley Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, who is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose. The film featured an ensemble cast including Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto, all of whom contributed to the film’s strong critical and commercial reception.

In May 2025, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, known for directing ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, also spoke about his collaborations with Tom Cruise, including updates on ‘Top Gun 3’. In an interview with Deadline, McQuarrie revealed that the story for the sequel is already well developed and described it as “already in the bag,” with a clear narrative framework in place. He further explained that while the story development process was relatively smooth, the real challenge lies in executing the film effectively on screen and maintaining the emotional depth and intensity that made the earlier installments so successful.
