A Delhi court on Tuesday reserved its decision on a plea by the police seeking seven days’ custody of Uday Bhanu Chib, president of the Indian Youth Congress, in connection with the AI Summit protest case. Delhi Police informed the court that Chib allegedly “hatched the conspiracy” and arranged logistical support for the protestors. They argued that extended custody was necessary to confront him with other accused persons and probe what they described as a larger conspiracy. The police termed the matter one of unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy, claiming that Chib directed other accused individuals, some of whom are currently in Jammu, Amethi, and Himachal Pradesh.

Chib’s lawyer opposed the custody request, stating that it should not be granted routinely. The defence said Chib had cooperated with the investigation, appeared for questioning twice, and denied any knowledge about where the protest T-shirts were printed. It was also argued that further interrogation had not produced additional information and that the police could gather details without placing him in custody. The police contended that the case involved more than just the T-shirts, pointing to bulk printing and coordination as part of a planned conspiracy. The court is expected to deliver its order at 12:30 pm.

According to the police, Chib has been charged under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to criminal conspiracy, causing hurt to deter a public servant, assault or criminal force against a public servant, obstructing officials during riot control, disobedience of lawful orders, offences committed by members of an unlawful assembly, imputations harmful to national integration, and common intention.

After his arrest, he was produced before the Patiala House Court. Chib was taken into custody as part of an ongoing probe into the protest at the AI Impact Summit 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. A group of Indian Youth Congress members staged a demonstration at the venue by removing shirts bearing the slogan “Compromised PM.” In a party statement, the organisation said the protest was aimed at opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he had compromised the nation’s identity.
