The Sheshnaag-150 swarming attack drone was successfully tested at Pokhran, marking a significant milestone in India’s unmanned aerial systems program, according to defence journalist Shiv Aroor of NDTV. The trial demonstrated the drone’s capability to function in coordinated swarms, a feature that strengthens both offensive and defensive roles in modern combat scenarios. Footage from the final moments of the test showed the drone’s manoeuvres and a controlled detonation sequence. The explosion was purely for demonstration purposes and did not involve an actual warhead, ensuring safety throughout the exercise.

During the test, the drone reached a distance of 700 kilometres, highlighting its long-range operational capability. Although this was not its maximum limit, the Sheshnaag-150 is designed to achieve a range of up to 1,000 kilometres, making it suitable for deep-strike missions. This extended reach allows it to be used in multiple roles, including border monitoring and precision targeting.

Pokhran, known for its historic role in India’s defence developments, served as an ideal testing ground. The controlled conditions allowed experts to evaluate key performance aspects such as endurance, navigation precision, and swarm coordination. Since no live warhead was used, the focus remained on assessing flight performance and system coordination rather than payload delivery.

This test reflects a larger shift in India’s defence strategy, emphasizing indigenous technology to reduce dependence on foreign systems. The Sheshnaag-150’s performance indicates significant progress in drone technology, particularly in autonomous and semi-autonomous operations. The use of drone swarms provides a strategic advantage by overwhelming enemy defences and increasing mission effectiveness.

Analysts view the demonstration not only as a technical achievement but also as a strategic message. By showcasing a drone with advanced range and swarm capabilities, India signals its commitment to enhancing deterrence and operational readiness. The Sheshnaag-150 is expected to play an important role in the country’s future defence framework.
