Russia and China Reiterate Support for India's BRICS Chairship in 2026.

With India leading BRICS in 2026, China and Russia have reaffirmed their backing for New Delhi’s chairship and its priorities for the year. The support was expressed during a BRICS Ambassadors’ Roundtable Discussion hosted by the Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi on Wednesday. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong said Beijing was prepared to work with India and other BRICS members to deepen cooperation and strengthen the grouping’s role in global affairs.

Xu outlined China’s vision for BRICS cooperation using the acronym “MAGIC” — Multilateralism, Action, Global Governance, Inclusiveness and Cooperation. He said China fully supports India’s BRICS presidency and is ready to cooperate with all member countries to promote stronger and lasting collaboration.

Russia’s Charge d’Affaires, Roman Babushkin, also reaffirmed Moscow’s support for India’s BRICS Chairship priorities for 2026. The Russian Embassy said Babushkin highlighted BRICS’ transformation over the past two decades into an important platform for practical cooperation and for representing the interests of the global majority amid the emergence of a multipolar world order.

The discussion, titled “BRICS Role and Priorities in Building a Resilient and Sustainable Global Order,” focused on resilience, sustainability, inclusivity, multilateralism and South-South cooperation. Participants discussed cooperation in areas including climate change, trade, finance, digital governance, food and energy security, technology and connectivity. Greater collaboration in artificial intelligence and civilisational dialogue was also emphasised.

India is chairing BRICS for the fourth time, having previously held the position in 2012, 2016 and 2021. Its 2026 theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting a people-centric and “Humanity First” approach. BRICS now comprises 11 emerging economies and covers political, security, economic, financial and cultural cooperation.
