Railways Intensify Water and Food Safety Checks Amid Rail Neer Quality Allegations

Indian Railways has launched an intensive inspection drive following allegations over the quality of Rail Neer packaged drinking water supplied to passengers at railway stations and on trains. The campaign focuses on checking drinking-water facilities, purification systems and catering services across railway premises. Officials have been instructed to inspect water coolers, RO and UV purification units, storage tanks, pipelines, taps and water-vending machines to ensure that passengers have access to clean and safe drinking water.

The action comes after allegations surfaced regarding impurities in Rail Neer bottles, bringing renewed attention to the quality-control procedures followed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which manufactures and distributes the railway's packaged drinking water. Railway authorities are also carrying out surprise inspections at food stalls and catering outlets. The checks are aimed at identifying violations related to hygiene, food preparation, storage and the handling of drinking water.

Officials are examining the condition of water storage tanks for issues such as rust, leakage and poor maintenance. Purification equipment and filters are also being checked to ensure that they are functioning properly and being maintained according to prescribed schedules. The inspection drive is not restricted to Rail Neer alone. Railway officials are also testing water supplied through vending machines and checking public drinking-water facilities at stations. Faulty or unhygienic water coolers may be removed or replaced as part of the exercise.

In Mumbai Central division, railway authorities reportedly took action against several food and beverage outlets found violating prescribed standards. Reports said 39 catering, food and juice stalls were shut between August 16 and August 24 during the inspection campaign. IRCTC has maintained that Rail Neer is produced under established quality-control procedures. Its manufacturing facilities conduct chemical and microbiological testing, while production processes are monitored to ensure compliance with applicable food and packaged-drinking-water standards.

The latest inspections are expected to provide greater clarity on the allegations and determine whether any complaints are linked to the manufacturing process or to transportation, storage and handling after the bottles leave production facilities. For passengers, railway officials advise checking the seal and condition of packaged drinking-water bottles before consumption. Any bottle showing signs of leakage, damage, unusual appearance or possible tampering should be avoided. Keeping the bottle and batch details can also help authorities investigate specific complaints.

With millions of passengers travelling by train every day, maintaining reliable drinking-water and catering standards remains an important part of railway safety and passenger services. The ongoing inspection drive is expected to strengthen monitoring and address quality concerns at stations and onboard trains.
