Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has suggested four key measures for Congress-ruled states to strengthen the education system and address concerns being raised by students. The suggestions were discussed during a recent Congress Working Committee meeting as the party continues its ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign, which focuses on issues faced by students, including examination irregularities, paper leaks, recruitment delays and access to quality education.

Gandhi has called for Congress-governed states to work towards developing an alternative education model. The proposed approach focuses on making academic and recruitment schedules more predictable, strengthening safeguards against examination paper leaks and ensuring that students are protected from discrimination in educational institutions.

A major part of the proposal is the preparation of clear academic and vacancy calendars. Such calendars could give students greater clarity about examination schedules, admissions and government recruitment, particularly those preparing for competitive examinations and public-sector jobs. Gandhi has also stressed the need for stronger mechanisms to prevent paper leaks in state-level examinations. Examination irregularities can force students to repeat tests and spend additional time and money on preparation, while also affecting confidence in the recruitment and education system.

Another area highlighted by Gandhi is discrimination in educational institutions. He has backed the implementation of the Rohith Vemula Bill, passed by the Karnataka government, which seeks to address discrimination, exclusion and injustice in educational institutions. The proposals come as the Congress seeks to expand its engagement with students through the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign. The initiative has been used by the party to highlight concerns surrounding examination systems, education costs, employment opportunities and the future prospects of young people.

The focus now shifts to implementation in Congress-ruled states. While clear calendars and stronger examination safeguards could provide students with greater certainty, their impact will ultimately depend on how effectively state governments put the proposed measures into practice. The Congress hopes that its state governments can demonstrate an education model centred on predictable academic schedules, fair examinations and a more inclusive environment for students.
