Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public appeals urging citizens to adopt precautionary measures in view of global uncertainty triggered by rising tensions between the United States and Iran. Reacting to the Prime Minister’s suggestion that people reduce fuel consumption, limit unnecessary travel, consider work-from-home options, and cut down on non-essential imports, Gandhi termed the move a “proof of failure” of the government’s handling of economic and foreign policy challenges.

The Prime Minister’s appeal comes at a time when escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia have raised concerns over crude oil price volatility and possible pressure on India’s import-dependent economy. The advisory is being seen as part of a broader effort by the government to encourage energy conservation and safeguard economic stability amid global uncertainty.

The Opposition has questioned the approach, arguing that such appeals place the burden on citizens instead of addressing structural issues. Gandhi said the government should focus on stronger policy measures rather than urging behavioural changes from the public. The remarks have further intensified the political exchange between the ruling party and the Opposition, with both sides offering contrasting views on how India should respond to global crises impacting inflation and supply chains.

Experts point out that developments in the US–Iran region continue to influence international oil markets, which directly affects fuel prices and inflation trends in countries like India. As global tensions persist, the debate around India’s economic preparedness and policy response is expected to continue gaining political momentum.
