At least 89 people lost their lives after severe storms and heavy rainfall swept through multiple districts of Uttar Pradesh, causing widespread destruction by uprooting trees, damaging houses, and knocking down electricity poles, officials from the Relief Commissioner’s office said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the situation following the unseasonal weather conditions, including thunderstorms and lightning, and instructed authorities to ensure that relief and financial aid reach affected families within 24 hours.

In a statement shared on X, the Relief Commissioner’s office confirmed that the extreme weather on May 13 resulted in 89 deaths, injuries to 53 people, the loss of 114 livestock animals, and damage to 87 homes across the state. The chief minister directed divisional commissioners and district magistrates to handle the situation with sensitivity, personally coordinate with affected families, and ensure immediate assistance and compensation are provided.

Officials said the Relief Commissioner’s office is closely monitoring the situation through continuous communication with district administrations while ensuring emergency funds are made available where needed. Among the worst-affected districts was Prayagraj, where several fatalities were reported due to storms and heavy rain. According to district officials, seven deaths occurred in Handia, four in Phulpur, three in Soraon, two in Meja, and one in Sadar.

In Bhadohi, authorities reported at least 16 deaths linked to storm-related incidents. Additional District Magistrate Kunwar Virendra Kumar Maurya said numerous trees and electric poles were uprooted while many houses suffered damage. Fatehpur also witnessed significant devastation, with nine deaths and 16 injuries reported. Additional District Magistrate Avinash Tripathi said eight people, including five women, died in Khaga tehsil, while another woman died after a house wall collapsed in Sadar tehsil.

In Pratapgarh, four people died in separate incidents caused by collapsing walls, damaged sheds, and lightning strikes during strong winds and rainfall. Superintendent of Police Deepak Bhukar said a 25-year-old man died after being trapped under the debris of a collapsed cemented shed in Lalganj Kotwali area, while another man died after a wall collapse in Baghrai police station limits. Two more deaths were reported in Kanpur Dehat. Police officials said a 19-year-old woman died after lightning struck near a neem tree where she had taken shelter with goats during heavy rain. Several animals were also killed, while a nearby elderly man sustained injuries.

Additional District Magistrate Dushyant Kumar said local officials have been asked to prepare detailed reports on human and livestock losses so compensation can be distributed according to government norms. In Deoria, two separate lightning strikes claimed the lives of two elderly residents and left others injured. Meanwhile, in Sonbhadra, a man died after a tree uprooted during the storm collapsed on him.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed district officials and departmental teams to visit affected areas, provide all necessary support to victims, and remain on high alert. He also directed the revenue and agriculture departments, along with insurance agencies, to survey crop and property damage and submit a detailed report to the government.
