Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has welcomed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) projection of 7 per cent economic growth for India in 2027, highlighting the potential of the country’s expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs) to support international trade and strengthen global supply chains.

Goyal described India’s economic outlook as a sign of the country’s continued growth momentum. He credited the government’s trade agreements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi with helping expand global economic activity and build more resilient supply chains. His remarks come as India seeks to strengthen its presence in international markets and create greater opportunities for domestic businesses and exporters.

The IMF’s growth forecast offers a positive outlook for India at a time when the global economy faces mounting uncertainty. In its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, the organisation projected worldwide economic growth of 3.1 per cent in 2026, rising to 3.4 per cent in 2027. However, the Fund cautioned that the global economy’s ability to withstand repeated shocks is becoming increasingly fragile, with geopolitical tensions and rising food and energy prices creating fresh challenges.

The IMF expects global inflation to reach 4.7 per cent in 2026 before easing to 4.1 per cent in 2027. Higher energy and food costs are expected to remain key factors influencing price movements across countries. The organisation warned that prolonged geopolitical disruptions, particularly in the Middle East, could push prices higher, intensify inflationary pressures and slow economic expansion.

Despite these concerns, the global economy has demonstrated a degree of resilience. The IMF attributed this partly to flexible energy supplies, increased production in some countries, the use of existing inventories and a gradual shift towards alternative energy sources. Investments in artificial intelligence have also helped support economic activity and international trade, providing an additional source of momentum amid broader uncertainty.

India’s expanding network of free trade agreements could play an important role in supporting its economic ambitions. These agreements aim to improve access to overseas markets, reduce trade barriers and create opportunities for Indian manufacturers, service providers and exporters. They can also encourage investment, diversify commercial partnerships and help businesses establish more reliable supply chains across different regions.

The benefits of trade agreements depend on how effectively Indian companies use the opportunities available to them. Competitive pricing, product quality, productivity and compliance with international standards will remain essential for businesses seeking to expand their global footprint. External factors, including fluctuations in energy prices, weakening demand in major markets and geopolitical tensions, could also influence export performance.

The IMF’s latest outlook therefore presents two contrasting developments: India is projected to maintain strong economic growth, while the wider global economy faces increasing risks. Goyal’s comments highlight the government’s expectation that trade partnerships will contribute to India’s economic expansion while supporting international commerce.

As global businesses navigate uncertainty and reconsider their supply-chain strategies, India’s ability to combine domestic economic strength with greater international market access could become increasingly significant. The country’s future growth will depend on a range of factors, including investment, productivity, export competitiveness and the effective implementation of trade opportunities.
