MG is taking direct aim at market leader BYD with the debut of its new S5 electric SUV, which was launched with much fanfare at Suntec City in Singapore on April 9. Positioned as a direct competitor to the BYD Atto 3—Singapore's top-selling car in 2024—the S5 comes with a competitive launch price of $165,888 (inclusive of COE), making it a strong rival in the same segment. The S5 is set to replace the MG ZS, the brand’s first EV introduced in Singapore when it relaunched in 2020.

Unlike the ZS, which was adapted from a petrol-powered model, the S5 has been developed as a fully electric vehicle from the outset. It is built on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), shared with MG's other EVs such as the Cyberster roadster and MG 4 hatchback. This platform allows for a more efficient layout, offering improved interior space and versatility. Although the car is just under 4.5 metres long, its extended 2.7-metre wheelbase provides ample room for passengers.

A flat rear floor adds to the spacious feel, giving passengers more legroom. The boot offers a practical 453 litres of storage and is accessible through a power tailgate with a hands-free kick sensor. Inside, the S5 embraces the sleek, minimalist design common in Chinese EVs, featuring a prominent 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it also comes preloaded with popular apps like Spotify and YouTube. Standard features include a wireless phone charger, panoramic sunroof, and 16 advanced driver-assistance technologies, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind spot monitoring.

The S5 is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 99kW (133hp) and 250Nm of torque, qualifying it for Category A COE. While its 0–100km/h acceleration time is a modest 9.9 seconds, the rear-wheel-drive layout promises a more engaging drive. Its 62kWh battery offers a claimed 560km of city range or 425km in mixed driving conditions. With a peak DC fast charging rate of 150kW, the S5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes. To sweeten the deal, authorised distributor Eurokars EV is providing a 10-year battery warranty, 10 years of free servicing, and a five-year general vehicle warranty with every purchase of the MG S5.
