Sound plays a crucial role for many car enthusiasts, as the roar of a finely tuned internal combustion engine (ICE) is often just as thrilling as the car's performance. This is particularly true for the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance, a car that, while still delivering an exhilarating driving experience, has sparked debate due to its change in engine configuration.
For decades, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been known for its high-performance AMG model, traditionally powered by a large-capacity V8 engine. This V8 setup not only offered impressive speed but also delivered a distinctive, rich sound—from the growl at startup to the deep, throaty notes that reverberate as the revs increase. Fans of the C 63 AMG were upset when it was announced that the latest version would replace the V8 with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and embrace a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
The switch comes in response to strict European regulations targeting efficiency and emissions, which make large V8 engines both inefficient and polluting. As a result, Mercedes-Benz had little choice but to adapt to these rules while maintaining the performance levels expected of an AMG vehicle.
So, does the new C 63 AMG still deliver on the entertainment front? Well, it depends on your definition of entertainment. Upon starting the car, the usual growl is replaced by silence as the electric motor takes charge. This change feels strange in an AMG, but it’s much quieter and more neighbor-friendly than before. As you accelerate, the car's engine kicks in, though the sound is different—not the iconic V8 growl, but a noticeable supercharger-like whine as the turbo spools up. In Sport+ or Race mode, the sound becomes more engaging, but it lacks the dramatic presence of the old V8s.
Performance-wise, the new C 63 AMG is a powerhouse. The 2.0-liter engine, combined with the electric motor, generates 671 hp and 1,020 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful four-cylinder production car in the world. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds—impressive for an engine of its size. The car's handling is equally remarkable, thanks to cutting-edge technology like electric limited-slip differentials, torque vectoring, and all-wheel-drive systems that deliver instant power to the wheels. Features like all-wheel steering and adaptive suspension allow the car to navigate corners with agility and confidence.
For those who want a bit of fun, the C 63 AMG offers a Drift mode and Race Start launch control, making it a thrill to drive on closed tracks. Ultimately, while the new C 63 AMG sacrifices some of the sound and soul of its V8 predecessor, it remains a highly capable and thrilling machine, capable of impressive performance and handling. If you can accept the quieter engine, it’s still worth considering, especially given the price tag of $708,888 (including COE as of January 2025). However, part of the car's charm has been its all-around sensory experience, and the loss of the V8 sound is a significant change for enthusiasts who have long cherished it.
