Manoj Kumar Agarwal Appointed West Bengal Chief Secretary, Political Row Erupts After BJP Government Takes Charge

Former West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of the state following the formation of the BJP government in Bengal, triggering sharp political reactions from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Agarwal, a senior IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre, played a key role in overseeing the recently concluded Assembly elections as the state’s top election official. His appointment to the highest bureaucratic post in the state came shortly after the BJP assumed power in Bengal for the first time.
The move has sparked controversy, with the TMC accusing the BJP of rewarding officials who were part of the election administration during the high-stakes polls. Senior TMC leaders criticised the decision and alleged that it raises serious concerns over the neutrality of constitutional institutions during the election process.
The opposition party claimed the appointment strengthens its allegations that the BJP enjoyed institutional support during the Assembly elections. TMC leaders described the development as “deeply troubling” and questioned the timing of the appointment. Political tensions further escalated after reports emerged that another official linked to the election process was also given an important advisory role in the new administration.
While the BJP government has not issued a detailed statement responding to the allegations, party leaders defended the appointment, saying Agarwal is an experienced administrator with decades of service in governance and public administration. The appointment has now become one of the first major political flashpoints after the change of power in West Bengal. Analysts believe the controversy reflects the intense political rivalry between the BJP and TMC, which dominated the state’s election campaign.
The 2026 Bengal Assembly elections witnessed aggressive campaigning, repeated accusations between rival parties, and heated debates over the functioning of administrative and election authorities. With the new government beginning its tenure amid political confrontation, the debate over institutional independence and bureaucratic appointments is expected to remain a key issue in Bengal politics in the coming weeks.
