The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday registered an FIR in connection with an alleged case of religious conversion reported from Kupwara district. Authorities have begun an investigation and have urged the public not to circulate rumours or unverified information that could disturb communal harmony.

According to police, the case has been registered as FIR No. 133/2026 after cognisance of the complaint was taken. Officials confirmed that the matter is under investigation and requested people to avoid sharing misleading content. Police in Uttar Pradesh have also filed a case against a local salon owner after a complaint was lodged by a resident of Bahadarpur village. The complainant alleged that his 17-year-old son was illegally converted to Islam in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, while learning barbering skills.

Circle Officer Sangram Singh stated that the complaint was received at Kotwali Nagar Police Station, claiming the minor had gone to Kupwara a few years ago to learn the trade and later underwent a religious conversion. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant legal provisions and initiated proceedings.

The victim’s father, Krishna Kumar, said his son had left home to learn work under a man named Waseem and had maintained occasional contact over the years, even visiting home periodically. He added that the family had no suspicion of any wrongdoing due to their long association. He further claimed they learned about the alleged conversion recently through social media, after receiving a video from his son stating he had adopted Islam. The family then approached authorities, saying the boy is currently 17 years and 4 months old. A detailed investigation into the matter is ongoing.
