Jason Momoa has offered an encouraging update on the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, confirming that production on the follow-up is expected to begin very soon. According to Deadline, the actor shared the news during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he revealed that filming is likely to start by the end of April.

Momoa, who played elite gamer Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in the first film, expressed strong enthusiasm for the sequel’s script. He said he found it even more entertaining than the original, admitting that it made him laugh out loud — something he noted rarely happens when he reads scripts. While he said he felt uncertain about the first film’s script initially, he described the sequel’s storyline as genuinely funny and highly engaging. Earlier reports from Deadline confirmed that director Jared Hess is set to return for A Minecraft Movie 2, with the screenplay written by Hess alongside Chris Galletta. The sequel is currently scheduled for release on July 23, 2027.

The announcement follows the major box office success of the first film, which premiered in April and went on to become Warner Bros.’ third-largest opening of all time. Reflecting on that success, Hess previously described the idea of making a sequel as “so much fun.” He explained that the expansive world of the Minecraft game left many elements unexplored in the first installment, creating plenty of opportunities for a follow-up. Hess also confirmed that the sequel will reunite key characters from the game, including Steve, played by Jack Black, and Alex, who was teased during the end credits of the original film.
