Members of US Special Operations Forces, along with personnel from 10 partner nations, carried out a capabilities demonstration along the Tampa Bay waterfront between 18 and 21 May. An Indian Armed Forces delegation, headed by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, GOC-in-C of the Western Command and the most senior serving Special Forces officer in the Indian military, took part in Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week 2026.

This participation marked a major step forward in India’s defence cooperation with the United States and its expanding international military engagement. For the first time, the Indian Army joined the prestigious CAPEX Capability Demonstration in Tampa, highlighting the skill, discipline, and operational effectiveness of its Special Forces. The showcase reflected India’s strengths in counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, as well as high-altitude and jungle operations.

The debut highlighted the Indian Army’s ability to work alongside global Special Operations units in complex and demanding environments. The event also served as a platform for senior-level defence engagements, where the Indian delegation held bilateral meetings with Special Operations leaders from partner countries, observed advanced demonstrations, and explored defence industry exhibits.

These interactions enabled the exchange of operational knowledge and further strengthened international defence partnerships, reinforcing India’s growing role in global Special Operations collaboration. The CAPEX showcase, a key feature of SOF Week, was titled “Battle in the Bay” and held on 20 May at the Tampa waterfront. It involved US Special Operations Forces and contingents from 10 partner nations operating in a coordinated live scenario.

India’s first participation in this biannual event was seen as a significant achievement, reflecting the capabilities of its Special Forces in specialized warfare environments. SOF Week 2026 also aligned with the broader vision of the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Assistant Secretary of War for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Derrick Anderson emphasized building a modern SOF force focused on adaptability, innovation, strong partnerships, and effective mission delivery across multiple domains.

He highlighted the importance of empowering personnel, fostering innovation, improving policy flexibility, and strengthening international cooperation to address evolving global security challenges. The event brought together Special Operations forces, defence leaders, and industry representatives from more than 70 countries, making it one of the largest gatherings of its kind. India’s participation highlighted its growing interoperability and contribution to global security cooperation.

India’s presence at SOF Week 2026 underscored its expanding influence in international Special Operations strategy. Through participation in such platforms, the Indian Armed Forces continue to strengthen partnerships, share expertise, and support collective security efforts. This engagement further reinforced India’s position as a capable and reliable partner in addressing modern security challenges.
