The Indian Army has launched AASHVAST Labs in Delhi to strengthen the security of military drones and other critical defence electronic systems. The initiative is aimed at identifying hidden vulnerabilities in hardware, software and firmware that may not be detected during routine physical inspections. AASHVAST, short for Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats, is a specialised system developed to examine sensitive military electronics in greater detail. The facility assesses both the physical and digital layers of defence equipment to identify concealed features, unauthorised modifications and potential security weaknesses that could affect the operation of military platforms.

The new labs are capable of checking defence systems for hidden passwords, embedded security keys, remote-access mechanisms and other concealed functions. They can also verify whether software and firmware updates installed on equipment have been authorised by the original manufacturer. These checks are intended to determine whether a system has been altered or contains components that were not part of its approved configuration.

Military drones are expected to be one of the major areas of focus for the AASHVAST programme. Although a drone may appear genuine during a conventional inspection, its software and firmware play a crucial role in determining how it navigates, responds to commands, communicates and performs different functions. Any hidden weakness in these digital layers could potentially affect the platform's reliability or security.

The Army is also examining the possibility of unauthorised foreign-origin components and software being incorporated into sensitive defence equipment. AASHVAST Labs can help determine whether a system contains unapproved elements or has undergone modifications after leaving the manufacturing facility or after being deployed.

The need for such detailed assessments has grown as modern military platforms increasingly depend on sophisticated electronics, software and communication networks. Even a relatively small vulnerability in a component or software system could potentially create a wider security concern when the equipment is being used in operational environments.

Navigation systems will also receive particular attention under the initiative. Military drones can face threats such as GPS spoofing and jamming, in which false positioning information is transmitted to a system or legitimate satellite signals are disrupted. By examining the security of navigation-related systems, AASHVAST is expected to help determine whether military platforms have adequate protection against such electronic attacks.

Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth inaugurated the AASHVAST facility in Delhi on August 14. According to the Army, the initiative is expected to improve the evaluation of critical defence platforms, strengthen cybersecurity and enhance operational preparedness. It is also aimed at supporting India's growing domestic defence technology ecosystem.

The launch comes at a time when India is placing greater emphasis on securing military equipment against both cyber and electronic threats. Defence systems are no longer dependent solely on physical machinery; software, firmware, sensors, communication networks and electronic controls now play an equally important role in their functioning.

AASHVAST Labs are intended to address this changing security environment by providing the Army with greater capabilities to examine the technology embedded inside critical defence platforms. The initiative could also help reduce dependence on external validation and improve India's ability to independently assess the security of equipment used by its armed forces. The development reflects India's broader push towards self-reliance in defence technology. Alongside efforts in indigenous manufacturing, electronic warfare, secure communications and cybersecurity, initiatives such as AASHVAST are becoming increasingly important to ensure that critical military systems remain secure, reliable and resilient against evolving technological threats.
