India's Military Robotics Revolution: DRDO Humanoids to Join Army by 2027

The Indian Army is gearing up for a major stride in defense technology with plans to deploy humanoid robots developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) by 2027. These futuristic robotic soldiers are designed to operate in high-risk military missions, drastically reducing the danger faced by human troops on the battlefield.
Designed with remarkable human-like mobility, the robots will be capable of walking and navigating tough terrains such as jungles, deserts, and mountainous regions. DRDO researchers have successfully developed prototypes for both the upper and lower body, enabling the robots to perform complex tasks including grasping objects, opening doors, and operating equipment. One of the primary focuses is to equip these robots to handle improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other dangerous ordnance, thereby making hazardous missions safer for soldiers.
The humanoid robots will feature advanced sensors and autonomous navigation systems such as SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), allowing real-time perception and situational awareness in diverse environments. Their dexterous arms, engineered with multiple degrees of freedom, will execute precise and delicate operations like bomb disposal or valve turning. With fall and push recovery abilities, these robots will maintain balance and continue missions even after battlefield impacts.
These robots are designed to operate under human supervision, ensuring complete control over critical combat decisions. By collaborating with soldiers, they will function as force multipliers, enabling efficient urban warfare, surveillance, and patrolling across sensitive borders. The deployment of humanoid robots will position India among the pioneering countries to bring robotic soldiers into active military service, reinforcing national security through cutting-edge technology.
DRDO’s humanoid robots not only signify a transformative leap in military robotics but also exemplify the country's commitment to integrating artificial intelligence and robotics in defense. Beyond combat, the technology holds promising applications in disaster response, hazardous material handling, healthcare, and even space exploration, where dexterous robots could assist humans in dangerous or inaccessible environments.
The Indian Army’s move to deploy humanoid robots by 2027 reflects a broader trend in global defense toward advanced automation and AI-enabled warfare.
