India and Oman Strengthen Defence Ties Through Academic and Training Cooperation

India and Oman have reaffirmed their longstanding defence partnership, with a recent meeting focusing on expanding cooperation in defence education, academic exchanges and professional training. A delegation from India’s National Defence College (NDC) was received by Vice Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis Al Raisi, Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces, at Al Murtafa Camp in Oman. The Indian delegation was led by Air Vice Marshal Manish Vasantkumar Patel, Senior Advisor at the National Defence College.

According to the Embassy of India in Oman, the two sides held discussions on several areas of mutual interest, particularly academic and training cooperation within the framework of the longstanding bilateral defence relationship. The meeting also provided an opportunity for senior officials from both countries to exchange views and strengthen institutional ties between their defence establishments.

India and Oman share a close strategic relationship built on historical, cultural and geographical links. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1955 and upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2008. Over the years, defence cooperation has become one of the key pillars of their bilateral ties.

Oman holds an important position in India’s engagement with the Gulf region and is also a significant partner in wider regional forums, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, Arab League and Indian Ocean Rim Association. New Delhi regards Muscat as an important pillar of its West Asia policy because of Oman’s strategic location and its longstanding role in regional diplomacy.

Defence relations between India and Oman have expanded through regular military exchanges, training programmes, exercises and high-level interactions. The latest National Defence College delegation’s visit highlights the importance both countries attach to developing professional and academic links between their armed forces.

India has also maintained extensive defence cooperation with Oman compared with its other partners in West Asia. Continued engagement in military education and training is expected to further strengthen mutual understanding and contribute to closer strategic coordination between the two countries. The latest discussions therefore underline that India-Oman defence ties extend beyond military exercises and equipment cooperation, with greater emphasis also being placed on professional education, institutional exchanges and the development of military leadership.
