India and China convened the 33rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing on March 25, 2025. Described by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as "positive and constructive," the meeting focused on assessing the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and discussing the early resumption of cross-border cooperation, including the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra and trans-border river management.

The Indian delegation was led by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary for East Asia, while the Chinese side was represented by Hong Liang, Director General of Boundary and Oceanic Affairs. Both delegations examined various proposals to implement agreements reached during the Special Representatives meeting in December 2024, aimed at improving border management. They agreed to enhance diplomatic and military mechanisms to ensure peace and stability along the border, which is considered vital for strengthening overall bilateral ties.

Additionally, the meeting laid the groundwork for the next Special Representatives dialogue, scheduled to be held in India later this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously expressed confidence in improving relations with China, highlighting the need for mutual learning and rebuilding trust strained since 2020. He emphasized that both nations, bound by deep historical and cultural ties, should foster healthy competition rather than confrontation. The discussions mark continued efforts by both sides to normalize relations following heightened border tensions. The MEA reaffirmed that maintaining peace along the LAC remains crucial for fostering a constructive and forward-looking relationship between the two countries.
