Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially renamed its flagship jet training aircraft, the Hindustan Jet Trainer HJT-36, as 'Yashas' following extensive modifications aimed at improving its spin resistance and departure characteristics. The announcement was made on Monday at Aero India 2025, where Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defence Production, unveiled the new name in the presence of D.K. Sunil, CMD of HAL, and other senior officials. Sunil explained that the aircraft had undergone significant upgrades, making it a more capable and relevant training system for modern military aviation, thus warranting a fresh identity.
To enhance its performance and readiness for induction into service, Yashas has been equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and a modern cockpit. These upgrades improve training efficiency, operational effectiveness, and reduce overall weight while replacing outdated imported components with Indian-made Line-Replaceable Units (LRUs).
Designed for Stage II pilot training, the aircraft is also suited for counter-insurgency operations, counter-surface force missions, aerobatics, and armament training. It is powered by an FADEC-controlled AL55I jet engine, offering an exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio and optimized thrust management.
The aircraft features a stepped-up rear cockpit and a drooped nose, ensuring better visibility and situational awareness for trainees. It also boasts a state-of-the-art glass cockpit with Multifunction Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD). In terms of capabilities, Yashas can perform stalls, spins, aerobatics, and carry up to 1,000 kg of armament. It also supports single-point ground refueling and defueling, making it a versatile and modern training aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
