Google Rolls Out Selfie Video Verification Feature to Improve Account Recovery and Security

Google has launched a new selfie video verification feature aimed at making account recovery and security checks easier for users. The tool allows people to confirm their identity and regain access to their Google accounts if they forget their password, lose access to their usual device, or are unable to use two-factor authentication methods.

According to The Verge, the feature allows users to record a brief video of their face using a smartphone or computer camera. Google then compares this recording with a previously saved reference video to verify whether the person trying to access the account is the legitimate owner. To activate the selfie video option, users are required to look into their camera and follow on-screen instructions involving simple head movements. These actions help capture different angles of the face, creating a more reliable identity reference. Google explained in its official blog that the process is similar in concept to biometric security systems like Apple’s Face ID, though it does not rely on additional hardware such as infrared sensors.

The company said the reference selfie video is securely recorded and stored in the cloud with encryption protection. Users have the option to remove the stored video anytime through their account settings. Google noted that the saved recording is primarily used for account sign-in verification, while users may choose to allow it for other purposes if they wish. When attempting to recover an account, users will need to record a new selfie video featuring similar movements. This helps Google confirm that the video is being captured in real time and reduces the risk of fraudulent attempts using photographs or manipulated deepfake content.

Google said the feature includes several security safeguards designed to prevent impersonation and detect suspicious login attempts. The company added that existing security protocols will continue to be applied to protect user accounts. The selfie video verification feature is being released worldwide in phases.
