General Dhiraj Seth has officially assumed office as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter for the Indian Army. He succeeds General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after serving the nation for more than four decades. The ceremonial change of command took place in New Delhi, where General Seth paid tribute to the country's fallen soldiers before taking charge of one of India's most important military positions. 

A veteran officer with nearly 40 years of military experience, General Seth has held several key operational and strategic appointments throughout his career. Before becoming Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and also commanded both the Southern Command and South Western Command. His extensive leadership experience across different formations has earned him a reputation for operational excellence and strategic planning. Notably, he is the first officer from the Armoured Corps to become India's Army Chief in almost three decades. 

After taking charge, General Seth emphasized that leading the Indian Army is both a privilege and a responsibility. He reaffirmed his commitment to the values of duty, honour, and service while unveiling his vision for a technologically advanced and future-ready force. His roadmap, known by the acronym "VIJAY," focuses on strengthening operational readiness, accelerating modernization, integrating advanced technologies, and enhancing the Army's overall combat capabilities to meet evolving security challenges. 

His appointment comes at a crucial time when the nature of warfare is rapidly changing due to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, cyber warfare, and autonomous systems. Defence experts believe that General Seth's experience in capability development and modernization places him in a strong position to guide the Indian Army through this transformation while ensuring preparedness along India's sensitive borders. 

Beyond military modernization, General Seth is also expected to strengthen India's drive towards defence self-reliance by supporting indigenous technology, improving force integration, and enhancing joint operations with the Navy and Air Force. These priorities align with India's broader defence strategy of building a more agile, technologically capable, and integrated military.

The leadership transition also reflects continuity in the Indian Army's long-term strategic objectives.
