Ed Sheeran is making history as the first international artist to perform in Bhutan. The Grammy-winning artist, known for hits like "Shape of You," will perform at Thimphu's Changlimithang Stadium, which holds 15,000 people, on Friday, January 24, as part of his ongoing Mathematics Tour.
Tickets for the concert start at just £10 (S$16.80), and 14-year-old fan Yangchen Tsering is excited to attend with her friends, despite initial concerns about the show being canceled after a nearby forest fire. She told The Times, "There aren’t many wealthy people in Bhutan who can travel abroad for such a concert, so having it here is incredible. We’ve all been excited, figuring out what to wear."
This concert is a significant event for Bhutan, a country that has only had access to TV for about 25 years and maintains a unique, traditional way of life. The concert is expected to be attended by members of Bhutan's royal family, including Queen Jetsun Pema and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, both of whom have been working to boost tourism in the country.
When announcing the concert, Ed Sheeran greeted fans with a local Bhutanese phrase, "Kuzuzampola!" He shared his excitement on Instagram, saying, “I’ve heard wonderful things about Bhutan.”
Sheeran also teased his next album, following 2023’s -, revealing that he’s "getting back into big pop" music. He explained to Variety, “Subtract was a very different album, more reflective and mellow, but now I’m excited to return to big pop music again.”
