On February 17, a Delta Air Lines regional jet crashed upside down at Toronto Pearson Airport due to strong winds following a snowstorm, injuring 18 of the 80 people on board. The flight, which originated from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, included three critically injured passengers, including a child.
The aircraft involved was a CRJ900, operated by Delta's Endeavor Air subsidiary. It had 76 passengers and four crew members on board. The plane, manufactured by Bombardier and powered by GE Aerospace engines, can accommodate up to 90 people. Canadian authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Passenger John Nelson shared a video on Facebook, showing a fire truck spraying water on the overturned plane. He described how the plane landed sideways and then flipped, with passengers scrambling to get out. Some needed assistance, while others managed to exit on their own.
The accident occurred amid challenging weather conditions at the airport, which had been dealing with high winds and freezing temperatures after a weekend snowstorm. The Delta plane landed at 2:13 pm after an 86-minute flight, coming to rest between two runways. Emergency responders acted swiftly, preventing fatalities, though 18 passengers were injured. Two of the injured were airlifted to trauma centers, and a child was transported to a children's hospital.
Toronto airport faced over two hours of closure, leading to delays and diversions to other airports, including Montreal. While operations resumed, delays were expected to continue as two runways remained closed for investigation. Authorities from Canada and the US are working together to probe the incident, with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which acquired the CRJ aircraft program from Bombardier, pledging full cooperation. This crash adds to a series of recent aviation incidents in North America, including a deadly collision between an Army helicopter and a passenger jet in Washington, a medical plane crash in Philadelphia, and a fatal plane crash in Alaska.
