Delhi Traffic Restrictions Today: Major Roads to Face Diversions Ahead of BRICS Summit

Delhi is expected to witness major traffic disruptions on Thursday as security arrangements are tightened ahead of the BRICS Summit. The Delhi Traffic Police has announced restrictions and diversions across several parts of the national capital, with traffic movement expected to be affected for more than six hours between 2 pm and 8:30 pm.

The traffic restrictions have been put in place to facilitate the movement of VVIPs and international delegations attending the BRICS Summit. According to the traffic advisory, more than 35 roads and 22 diversion points will be covered under the arrangements. Traffic movement may be regulated or temporarily stopped at different locations depending on the movement of dignitaries and security requirements.

Several important roads in Central and South Delhi are expected to experience restrictions. These include Sardar Patel Marg, Akbar Road, Teen Murti Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Mathura Road, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Barakhamba Road, Africa Avenue, Lodhi Road, Niti Marg and Tolstoy Marg. Roads connecting major government, diplomatic and commercial areas may also see changes in traffic movement during the afternoon and evening.

The traffic police has identified multiple diversion points to manage the movement of vehicles. Areas around Patel Chowk, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Dhaula Kuan, Moti Bagh, Mandi House and Bhairon Road are among the locations where commuters could face diversions or temporary restrictions. Vehicles may be redirected towards alternative roads depending on the prevailing traffic and security situation.

The restrictions are also expected to affect commuters travelling towards Indira Gandhi International Airport. Traffic movement around Dhaula Kuan and Moti Bagh could result in longer travel times for passengers heading towards the airport and Gurugram. Travellers with flights during the affected period have been advised to leave earlier than usual and keep sufficient additional time for their journey.

People travelling to major railway stations may also experience delays. Routes leading towards New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station could be affected by the traffic arrangements. Commuters have been advised to check their route before leaving and follow directions issued by traffic personnel on the ground.

The Delhi Traffic Police has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel through restricted areas during the specified period and use public transport wherever possible. The Metro is expected to remain a more convenient option for many commuters as several major roads come under traffic regulation. The restrictions are part of the wider security and traffic-management arrangements for the BRICS Summit, which is being held in New Delhi from September 11 to 13. As the movement of visiting leaders may require short-notice changes, traffic conditions could vary throughout the restriction period.

Authorities have advised motorists to follow traffic police instructions, avoid stopping on restricted roads and allow extra time for their journeys. Commuters are also advised to check the latest traffic updates before setting out, particularly if they need to travel through Central or South Delhi between 2 pm and 8:30 pm.
