Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, has officially cut ties with Marvel, citing his disappointment over how he was treated at the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine. Liefeld, 57, who first introduced the wisecracking antihero in 1991, has had a long-standing relationship with Marvel. However, he felt sidelined at the New York premiere of the latest Deadpool film, which is the first in the franchise since Disney acquired Fox and integrated the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Speaking on his Robservations podcast, Liefeld revealed that he was ignored by Disney executives, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. Adding to his frustration, he and his family were not invited to the after-party. "It was meant to embarrass, diminish, and defeat me," Liefeld said. "At some point, you get the message loud and clear."
Liefeld also expressed frustration over his lack of involvement in the film's marketing and promotion. He had requested a special credit beyond the standard recognition given to comic book creators, emphasizing the importance of creators in building these cinematic worlds. "Marvel has never been great at treating creators well," he wrote in an email. "Without the characters, worlds, and stories we create—like Deadpool—there are no blockbuster movies to make. I am not some tool to be used; I am the imagination behind it all."
He stressed that comic book creators deserve better recognition, saying, "This is an easy fix. But if I don't speak up, nothing will change." Liefeld has previously voiced frustration with Marvel, even blaming the studio for delays in Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released six years after Deadpool 2. In a 2020 interview with ComicBook.com, he said, "I blame Marvel. Whatever issue they had with their plans, they could have just commissioned the movie. But they didn’t."
He also expressed skepticism about Deadpool fitting into the more family-friendly MCU, suggesting that Marvel was hesitant to greenlight the film. "If Ryan [Reynolds] isn't making Deadpool 3 right now, it's because Marvel hasn’t let him. That’s all there is to it," Liefeld said. "Do I trust their system? I have no idea. If it happens, great—but I’m not holding my breath."
