Assam Floods: Death Toll Climbs to 47, Around 80 People Missing, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam’s flood situation has worsened, with the death toll reaching 47 as rescue operations continue across several affected districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that around 70 to 80 people are still missing, raising concerns that the number of casualties could increase further as search operations progress. The Chief Minister said teams are working to trace missing residents and provide assistance to families affected by the floods. Several areas remain difficult to access due to heavy waterlogging, damaged roads and disrupted communication links, making rescue efforts more challenging.

According to officials, floodwaters have affected large parts of Assam, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes and move to relief camps. Emergency teams are carrying out evacuation operations with the help of boats and other rescue equipment to reach people stranded in submerged villages. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration and other agencies are involved in relief and rescue activities. Authorities are focusing on providing essential supplies such as food, clean drinking water and medical support to affected communities.

The floods have also caused widespread damage to agriculture and infrastructure. Many farmers have suffered losses as farmland remains submerged, while roads and other public facilities have been damaged in several districts. Chief Minister Sarma said the government is closely monitoring the situation and taking steps to ensure immediate relief reaches those affected. Compensation assistance has also been announced for families who have lost loved ones in the disaster.

Assam faces recurring flood challenges every year during the monsoon season due to the overflowing of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Heavy rainfall, river erosion and the state’s low-lying geography often leave many communities vulnerable to severe flooding. As rescue operations continue, authorities are working to locate missing people and restore normalcy in flood-affected areas.
