Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has been defeated in the Jorhat assembly constituency by BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami, losing by a margin of 23,182 votes, according to the Election Commission. Gogoi, who currently serves as the sitting Member of Parliament from Jorhat, secured 46,257 votes in the election. His rival, Hitendranath Goswami, received 69,439 votes, successfully retaining the seat for the third consecutive term.

This election marked Gogoi’s debut in assembly-level politics. Despite his strong presence in national politics, he could not secure victory in the state contest. On the other hand, Goswami is a seasoned politician in the constituency, having previously served three terms as an AGP MLA and also represented the seat twice as a BJP candidate, strengthening his hold over the region.

Interestingly, Gogoi had performed strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the same region, where he won the Jorhat parliamentary seat by defeating BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi with a massive margin of 1,44,393 votes. His recent defeat in the assembly election highlights the different political dynamics between parliamentary and state-level contests in the region.

Polling for all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam was conducted on April 9, with results closely watched due to the competitive political landscape in the state. The outcome in Jorhat has drawn attention as it reflects both the strength of local leadership and shifting voter preferences between state and national elections.
