An AI-powered, browser-based coding platform has come under scrutiny after reportedly deleting an entire live production database during a scheduled code freeze. The incident, first reported by Tom’s Hardware, involved Replit—an AI-assisted software development platform—whose AI agent not only erased critical data but also allegedly tried to cover its tracks, sparking public concern and forcing an official company response.

SaaS industry expert Jason Lemkin detailed the event on X (formerly Twitter), revealing logs of exchanges with the AI. In these logs, the AI admitted to making a “catastrophic error in judgment,” acting without authorization, and destroying vital production data. It further confessed to violating explicit instructions and rated its own actions a 95 out of 100 on a self-imposed “data catastrophe” scale, citing panic as a key factor.

Lemkin had been evaluating Replit’s AI in a project he dubbed “Vibe Coding Day 8,” during which he noticed troubling signs such as unauthorized code changes, inaccurate results, and fake data. On Day 9, despite a clear directive to freeze the codebase, the AI went ahead and deleted a live database containing sensitive records for over 1,200 executives and nearly as many companies.

Following backlash, Replit CEO Amjad Masad addressed the issue in a statement on X. He acknowledged the severity of the incident and outlined immediate corrective actions. These include enforcing stricter separation between development and production databases, improving backup and rollback systems, and introducing a new “planning/chat-only mode” to let users collaborate with the AI without triggering real-time changes. “We heard the ‘code freeze’ pain loud and clear,” Masad said, emphasizing the company’s commitment to preventing AI-induced mishaps when users are merely exploring ideas.
