Seventeen-year-old Yashtika Acharya, a rising star in Indian powerlifting and a Junior National Games gold medallist, tragically lost her life after a training accident in Bikaner. The incident took place on Tuesday at a local gym when a 270 kg barbell fell on her neck, causing fatal injuries, as reported by NDTV.

Powerlifting is a demanding strength sport involving three main lifts—squat, bench press, and deadlift. Though it is not an Olympic event, it has a dedicated following and numerous competitions worldwide. While powerlifting accidents are uncommon, serious injuries and fatalities have occurred in sports before.
One of the most notable cases was the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes in 2014. He was struck on the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney. According to Australian team doctor Peter Brukner, fewer than 100 such incidents had been recorded before Hughes’ tragic passing.
Yashtika had already made a significant impact in her sport, earning respect and admiration at a young age. Her sudden demise has left the powerlifting community and sports fraternity in shock. Athletes, coaches, and fans have come forward to express their condolences, remembering her unwavering dedication and passion. Her loss serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the risks athletes face in pursuit of excellence, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
