At least 400 people were killed and around 250 injured after a devastating airstrike struck a major drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing Afghanistan–Pakistan conflict. Afghan authorities have accused Pakistan of carrying out the attack, claiming the strike hit a 2,000-bed medical facility filled with patients and staff.

According to Afghan officials, the attack took place late at night and destroyed large sections of the hospital, leaving rescue teams scrambling through rubble and flames to recover bodies. Eyewitness accounts described scenes of chaos, with victims trapped under debris as emergency responders battled fires at the site.

Pakistan, however, has firmly denied targeting any civilian infrastructure. Officials in Islamabad stated that the airstrikes were “precision operations” aimed solely at militant infrastructure and alleged terror facilities in Kabul and eastern Afghanistan. They dismissed the hospital strike claims as “baseless” and accused Afghan authorities of spreading misinformation. The incident comes amid rapidly escalating hostilities between the two neighbouring countries, with cross-border clashes and air raids intensifying over the past few weeks. The conflict, which reignited in late February, has already derailed earlier ceasefire efforts and heightened regional instability.

India strongly condemned the strike, calling it a “massacre dressed as a military operation” and expressing deep concern over the targeting of civilian infrastructure. New Delhi urged the international community to take serious note of the incident and hold those responsible accountable, stressing that such actions violate basic humanitarian norms.

Global reactions have also poured in, with calls for restraint and adherence to international law. The United Nations and other international bodies have urged both sides to de-escalate tensions and prioritise civilian protection as fears grow of a broader regional crisis. The Kabul hospital strike has further deepened mistrust between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with both sides trading accusations even as the humanitarian toll continues to rise.
