According to Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, regular walking can significantly reduce the risk of a variety of health problems. These include chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, and certain cancers. Moreover, walking can also lower the likelihood of premature death, underscoring its importance in improving long-term health outcomes.
Walking not only enhances physical health but also benefits mental well-being. Dr. Kumar notes that walking is linked to improved brain function, reducing the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, depression, and anxiety. This exercise also supports better sleep quality, helping individuals rest more deeply and consistently. By engaging in daily walks, the body experiences a holistic health boost, including stronger bones and muscles, which in turn decreases the chances of osteoporosis (weakened bones), sarcopenia (muscle loss), and dynapenia (loss of muscle strength).
Additionally, Dr. Surender Pal Singh, the head of the physiotherapy department at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, emphasizes that walking can be particularly effective for weight management and cardiovascular health. He stresses the importance of walking at a brisk pace for maximum benefits. Simply strolling at a slow pace may not provide as many advantages as walking faster, which helps increase fat burning and accelerates the bodys metabolism. Dr. Singh encourages people to gradually increase their walking speed over time, which not only aids in fat reduction but also strengthens the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
For the best results, Dr. Singh suggests aiming for continuous walks of 20 to 30 minutes. This uninterrupted period of exercise is more effective than breaking it up into shorter intervals, such as walking for five minutes here and there. Continuous walking helps the body work at a sustained level, enhancing overall health and allowing the body to reap the full benefits. Over time, progressively increasing the walking pace helps the body adapt and maximizes cardiovascular and musculoskeletal improvements.
