United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer arrived at Vanijya Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday for high-level discussions with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, with talks focused on the proposed interim trade agreement and the larger India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Greer was accompanied by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor along with a delegation of American trade officials. Ahead of the visit, Gor expressed confidence about the upcoming discussions, saying he looked forward to welcoming Greer to the national capital for his meeting with Goyal and other senior Indian officials.
The visit follows the recent interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, which provided fresh momentum to bilateral discussions. The talks between the two sides are expected to focus on advancing the India-US Joint Statement and finalising an Interim Agreement as part of ongoing negotiations for a broader trade partnership. The US Trade Representative’s office said the negotiations were initiated by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on February 13, 2025.
India is currently engaged with Washington over proposed tariff-related measures under the US Section 301 review process while also working towards completing a bilateral trade framework agreement. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that negotiations on the interim trade pact had entered the final phase. Addressing the media after the G7 Summit, Misri noted that both countries had made substantial progress and highlighted the importance of Greer’s visit in taking the discussions forward.
“With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim free trade bilateral trade agreement. We are in the final stages of concluding that agreement,” Misri said. After completing his India visit, Greer is scheduled to travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he will hold meetings with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Presidential Administration head Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev. According to the USTR, Greer’s international engagements are aimed at promoting discussions on achieving fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade relations with the United States.
