US Teen Arrested Over Alleged Hindu Temple Shooting Plot After Rifle Jams

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Illinois over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship, according to media reports. The suspected attack was reportedly disrupted after the firearm malfunctioned, while information shared with a co-worker prompted authorities to investigate. The suspect, identified in reports as Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, faces criminal charges connected to an alleged terrorist threat and unlawful weapons possession. Prosecutors say the investigation uncovered evidence suggesting preparations for a violent attack.

According to reports, a co-worker became concerned after receiving disturbing communications related to the alleged plan. The information was passed on to law enforcement, leading police to investigate and arrest the suspect. Authorities subsequently searched the suspects residence and reportedly recovered an AR-style rifle, ammunition, loaded magazines, body armour and other equipment. Investigators also found an alleged eight-page document containing violent statements and references to extremist ideologies.

Prosecutors allege that the suspect expressed hostility towards several racial and ethnic communities, including people of Indian origin. Investigators are examining the document and other evidence to establish the motive and determine the extent of the alleged preparations. A Hindu temple in the Aurora area was reportedly considered a potential target. However, the precise intended location and other details of the alleged plan remained under investigation.

The case has raised concerns among Indian-American and Hindu communities about the security of religious institutions and the threat posed by extremist violence. Places of worship frequently host religious ceremonies, cultural programmes and community gatherings, making the safety of worshippers an important concern. Authorities reportedly coordinated their response with multiple local police departments and notified Hindu places of worship in the area after learning of the potential threat. The investigation is also reported to involve the FBI.
