Ukraine FM Sybiha Welcomes India's Role in Restoring Freedom of Navigation in the Black Sea During Talks With Jaishankar

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has welcomed India’s engagement in efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, saying the issue remains important for global food security and international markets. Sybiha made the remarks during a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The two ministers discussed peace initiatives, bilateral relations and a range of international developments, including the situation in the Black Sea.

In a post on X, Sybiha said restoring safe navigation in the Black Sea was essential for global food supplies. He added that Ukraine was prepared to contribute constructively to such efforts and valued India’s involvement. The Ukrainian minister also highlighted preparations for the upcoming meeting of the India-Ukraine Intergovernmental Commission. According to Sybiha, the next round of discussions is expected to include a strong focus on business and innovation.

Ukraine is also seeking to expand cooperation with India in several sectors, including science, education, technology, agriculture, information technology and pharmaceuticals, he said. Jaishankar separately referred to his meeting with Sybiha, noting that it provided an opportunity to review developments since his recent visit to Ukraine. The Indian minister said the discussion focused on developments over the previous few weeks. During his New York engagements, Jaishankar also held talks with Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi. The two sides reviewed progress in political, economic and educational cooperation and exchanged views on the conflict in Ukraine.

Jaishankar also co-chaired the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace Prosperity (P4M) Summit alongside European Council President António Costa. The discussions centred on strengthening multilateral cooperation, protecting international law and developing frameworks to address emerging challenges. Jaishankar stressed the importance of multilateralism at a time of geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He also highlighted the need for greater cooperation on emerging technologies, diversification of global systems and respect for international rules and norms. The diplomatic engagements took place as Jaishankar attended the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he has been meeting foreign counterparts to discuss bilateral relations, global developments and multilateral cooperation.
