"Terror Will Have Consequences": India Hits Back at Shehbaz Sharif's UN Speech

India has strongly hit back at Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, rejecting his comments on Kashmir and the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict while warning that terrorism and those supporting it will face consequences. During his address to the UN General Assembly, Sharif once again raised the Kashmir issue and called for a settlement, arguing that resolving the dispute was important for lasting peace in South Asia. He also referred to the 2025 military confrontation between India and Pakistan and praised US President Donald Trump for his role in bringing the hostilities to an end.

India rejected Pakistan’s narrative and responded through its Right of Reply at the UN. India’s First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Petal Gahlot, criticised Islamabad’s repeated references to Kashmir while focusing attention on terrorism and Pakistan’s record concerning militant groups. Gahlot pointed to the presence of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he was killed by US forces in 2011. India has repeatedly cited the episode while questioning Pakistan’s claims regarding its efforts against terrorism. She also argued that Pakistan’s statements at international forums could not erase concerns over terrorist organisations operating from its territory.

The Indian response also addressed Sharif’s comments about the 2025 conflict. The confrontation followed the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. New Delhi has consistently rejected claims that the ceasefire following the military confrontation was the result of third-party mediation. Pakistan, meanwhile, has continued to highlight Kashmir in its diplomatic messaging and has credited Trump with helping bring the fighting to an end.

The latest exchange at the UN reflects the continuing differences between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, terrorism and regional security. While Islamabad continues to seek international attention on the Kashmir dispute, New Delhi has maintained that terrorism remains the central concern in dealing with Pakistan. India’s latest message was that its approach to terrorism would remain firm and that attacks originating from across the border would carry consequences. The confrontation at the UN once again underlined the deep diplomatic divide between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
