NEW YORK — On Friday (April 25), Sean Diddy Combs lawyer defended the rappers participation in a swinger lifestyle, arguing it was part of a common, consensual way of living — a key point in his legal strategy after Combs rejected a plea deal in a sex trafficking case. Federal prosecutor Madison Smyser revealed at a Manhattan court hearing that Combs had turned down a plea offer, though she didn’t provide details. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. He is accused of forcing women into elaborate sexual acts known as Freak Offs involving male sex workers.
Combs maintains the activities were consensual. His attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told Judge Arun Subramanian that Combs’ belief in the acceptability of hiring escorts and having multiple partners was part of a recognized lifestyle, not criminal intent. “There’s a lifestyle, call it ‘swingers’ or whatever you want, and Mr. Combs was part of it,” Agnifilo argued. “It’s relevant because many consider it normal, and so did he.”
Prosecutor Maureen Comey urged the judge to block any defense references to other public figures who hired escorts, to which Agnifilo responded that they had no plans to do so, but would assert that Combs’ alleged actions reflected a broader lifestyle pattern. The trial is expected to run for 8 to 10 weeks, with jury selection beginning May 5 and opening statements on May 12.
Known by various stage names including Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs helped launch the careers of artists like Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G., and Usher in the ’90s and 2000s. However, prosecutors claim his public image masked abusive behavior. They allege Combs used threats and financial control to manipulate women into the sex acts, which reportedly spanned days, involved drugs, and were sometimes filmed while he watched and masturbated. Jurors are expected to see video evidence during the trial. Combs has been held in a Brooklyn jail since September and could face decades in prison if found guilty.
