Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day official visit to Thailand, where he will engage in high-level bilateral discussions with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance trade cooperation, and foster regional partnerships within the Bay of Bengal region.
Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi will be warmly received by the Indian diaspora in Thailand, who have organized a grand welcome event in his honor. This gathering reflects the strong cultural and economic bonds between the two nations. Following this, he will proceed to the Government House in Bangkok, where he will be officially received with a ceremonial welcome. The leaders will then hold bilateral discussions, focusing on key areas such as trade, investment, connectivity, defense collaboration, and cultural exchanges. This meeting is expected to result in agreements aimed at deepening India-Thailand relations.
Later in the evening, Modi will join other leaders from BIMSTEC member states—Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, and Bhutan—to participate in the signing of the Agreement on Maritime Cooperation. This initiative is expected to enhance regional maritime security, trade, and connectivity, further strengthening BIMSTEC’s role as a key economic and strategic alliance in the region.
During the summit, Modi will also have the opportunity to engage with prominent leaders, including Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, and Myanmar’s military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. These interactions will be crucial for addressing shared regional challenges, promoting economic growth, and fostering collaboration in areas such as security, trade, and sustainable development. Modi’s visit underscores India’s commitment to deepening engagement with Southeast Asian nations, reinforcing its Act East Policy, and strengthening BIMSTEC’s role in regional economic and strategic affairs.
