Prime Minister Narendra Modis ongoing visit to Indonesia is set to significantly strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with several major announcements expected across defence, strategic infrastructure, critical minerals, and technology cooperation, according to sources familiar with the discussions. One of the key developments is Indonesias decision to adopt an election management system inspired by Indias successful electronic voting model. India is expected to assist Jakarta in developing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) tailored to Indonesias electoral requirements, reflecting growing international confidence in Indias election management expertise.
In another significant boost to defence cooperation, Indonesia has reportedly decided to procure Indias indigenously developed Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles. The decision comes after the missile systems operational capabilities gained wider attention following Indias recent military operations, reinforcing confidence in the countrys defence manufacturing sector. The two countries are also expected to deepen cooperation in securing critical mineral supply chains. Under the proposed framework, India plans to invest in Indonesias steel, nickel, and rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing industries, helping diversify supply chains while supporting Indias growing clean energy and advanced technology sectors.
Defence collaboration is expected to receive another push as Indonesia looks to expand its inventory of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. India is likely to provide additional missile batteries as part of the expanded partnership, further strengthening bilateral security cooperation. Maritime connectivity is another important focus area during the visit. Both nations are expected to jointly develop the strategically located Sabang Port near the Strait of Malacca. The ports proximity to Indias Great Nicobar infrastructure project makes it a key asset for enhancing regional maritime cooperation, trade connectivity, and security coordination in the Indo-Pacific.
Prime Minister Modi held talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at Jakartas Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace), where he signed the official guestbook before the two leaders exchanged greetings and held bilateral discussions. The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial state welcome at the Presidential Palace, highlighting the importance both countries attach to their expanding partnership. Indias Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as an important milestone in advancing the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across multiple priority sectors, while reaffirming the deep trust and longstanding friendship between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi also expressed his appreciation to President Prabowo for the warm reception extended to him at the Presidential Palace.
The Prime Minister arrived in Jakarta on Monday for the first leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour. His aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets upon entering the countrys airspace, and he was personally received by President Prabowo at the airport before being welcomed with a traditional cultural performance. The visit, taking place from July 6 to July 8 at the invitation of President Prabowo, marks Prime Minister Modis fourth visit to Indonesia. It is also the first bilateral visit since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
Officials expect the high-level discussions to further accelerate cooperation in defence, maritime security, economic engagement, and regional strategic initiatives. In recent years, the two countries have steadily expanded military exchanges, conducted joint exercises, strengthened defence industry collaboration, and enhanced maritime coordination, reflecting their shared commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
