India and Myanmar have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening border security and preventing cross-border threats, with Myanmar assuring New Delhi that its territory will not be allowed to serve as a base for activities targeting Indias security interests. The assurance came during high-level bilateral discussions between officials of the two neighbouring countries, highlighting their shared focus on maintaining peace and stability along the sensitive India-Myanmar border.

The two-day meeting, held in New Delhi on July 7 and 8, brought together senior officials led by Indias Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Myanmars Deputy Home Minister Major General Min Thu. According to Indias Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), both sides reviewed the security situation along the nearly 1,600-kilometre shared border and discussed ways to enhance cooperation against insurgency, smuggling, illegal movement, and other cross-border crimes.

One of the most significant outcomes of the dialogue was Myanmars commitment that its territory would not be used for activities that could threaten Indias national security. This assurance is particularly important because Indias northeastern states have historically faced security challenges linked to insurgent groups operating near or across the international border. While both countries have cooperated on security matters for years, the latest statement reinforces their intention to work together against such threats.

The discussions also covered measures to improve border management, strengthen intelligence sharing, and deepen coordination between security agencies.
