Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter Maharashtra on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a cloudburst alert for Nashik while restoring traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai-Pune Expressways Missing Link after a temporary closure caused by a landslide. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state, with Nashik among the districts facing the highest risk. The administration has urged residents, particularly those living near rivers, dams, and hilly regions, to remain vigilant as intense rainfall could trigger flash floods and landslides.

As a precaution, disaster response teams have been placed on standby, and local authorities are closely monitoring water levels in reservoirs and rivers. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official weather updates. Mumbai continued to witness intermittent heavy showers that led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, slowing vehicular movement during peak hours. Commuters faced delays on key roads as traffic moved at a sluggish pace amid reduced visibility and flooded stretches.

Public transport services also experienced disruptions, with some suburban train services running behind schedule due to adverse weather conditions. Flight operations at Mumbai airport were affected as well, with several arrivals and departures delayed because of poor visibility and operational constraints. In a significant relief for motorists, officials reopened the Mumbai-bound lane of the Mumbai-Pune Expressways Missing Link after completing emergency clearance work. The newly inaugurated stretch had been shut following a landslide triggered by continuous rainfall, raising concerns over slope stability in the ghat section. Authorities said engineers inspected the affected area, removed debris, and carried out safety assessments before allowing traffic to resume. Although the route has been reopened, officials said monitoring will continue as heavy rainfall persists across the region.

The Missing Link project, designed to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by bypassing the winding and accident-prone sections of the expressway, remains one of Maharashtras flagship infrastructure projects. However, the recent landslide has sparked fresh discussions about the need for stronger slope protection measures and improved drainage systems to withstand extreme monsoon conditions. Rail connectivity between Mumbai and Pune also continued to face challenges, with several trains running late or being diverted due to weather-related issues, including water accumulation and landslide risks along certain sections of the route.

The Maharashtra government has appealed to residents to exercise caution over the next few days as forecasts indicate that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in several districts. Emergency agencies remain on alert, while district administrations have been instructed to respond swiftly to any rain-related incidents. With the southwest monsoon remaining active across the state, officials are keeping a close watch on vulnerable locations to minimize the impact of flooding, landslides, and other weather-related emergencies.
