At least two people were killed and several others injured, including three police officers, after a shooting at a high-rise building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday, according to officials cited by CNN. Authorities also confirmed that the suspected gunman died following the incident. A preliminary investigation indicated that the shooter may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the investigation.
According to the official Minneapolis City News account, Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officers reached the building within about three minutes of receiving emergency 911 calls. After reports of gunfire from an upper floor, officers entered the building and encountered haze that affected visibility. Three officers were injured during the response. Officials said two of the officers suffered gunshot wounds. All three were transported to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.
One officer suffered what appeared to be a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, while another was undergoing surgery. The third officer was being assessed for an injury that officials described as apparently non-life-threatening. In total, seven people were taken to Hennepin Healthcare. One of them later died at the hospital, while another victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a post on X, citing MPD officials, that the injured officers were expected to make a full recovery. He also thanked law enforcement personnel working at the scene to protect residents and others in downtown Minneapolis. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
