Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has attracted more online views than the audience Fox News recorded for Donald Trump’s speech at the Republican midterm convention, highlighting the growing influence of digital platforms in political coverage. The interview, which was originally expected to air on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, was instead released online after Kimmel said it would not be broadcast on television. The decision came amid concerns over federal rules governing equal access for political candidates.
The interview quickly gained attention on YouTube and accumulated millions of views. Its growing audience eventually surpassed the approximately 2.5 million viewers who watched Trump’s convention speech on Fox News, according to Nielsen figures reported by Reuters. Trump delivered his speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, where he urged Republicans to remain focused on the upcoming elections and portrayed the midterms as an important test of his administration. Fox News carried the address in full, while other major cable news networks also covered the event.
The Kimmel interview, meanwhile, became a political story of its own because of the decision to keep it off ABC’s television broadcast. Instead of reaching viewers through the traditional late-night television audience, the conversation was made available through YouTube, where viewers could watch it at any time. Talarico, who is campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas, discussed his campaign, his political battle with Republican candidate Ken Paxton and his response to criticism from Trump. His growing national profile has made his media appearances particularly significant as the Texas Senate race develops.
The comparison between the two figures, however, comes with an important qualification. Trump’s 2.5 million figure represents a television audience measured during a specific broadcast period, while Kimmel’s number represents cumulative YouTube views. The measurements are therefore not directly equivalent. A YouTube video can continue collecting views long after it is published, whereas television ratings generally measure audiences during a particular time period. In addition, Trump’s total audience was not limited to Fox News because his speech was also available through other television, streaming and online outlets.
Nevertheless, the performance of Kimmel’s interview demonstrates how quickly political content can gain traction online. What might have been a conventional late-night television interview became a much larger digital story after the decision was made to release it on YouTube. The episode also comes at a time when political campaigns and media organizations are increasingly using online platforms to reach voters directly. YouTube, social media and streaming services allow political interviews and speeches to remain available well beyond their original broadcast windows.
The figures therefore offer an interesting snapshot of the changing political media landscape. Trump’s convention speech drew millions of television viewers, while Kimmel’s interview with Talarico generated an even larger number of views online. Although the two figures measure different types of audiences, the comparison shows that major political conversations are no longer confined to traditional television.
