Delhi is preparing for heightened security ahead of the proposed “Jantar Mantar 2.0” protest scheduled for October 10, with opposition groups and activists seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding electoral-roll revisions. The planned demonstration has prompted extensive security preparations across the national capital. According to media reports, authorities are preparing for a potentially large turnout, with estimates suggesting that more than 50,000 people could gather. However, the actual number of participants remains uncertain.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has reportedly made around 23,000 personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) available for deployment, with additional personnel expected to assist Delhi Police in maintaining law and order. The security arrangements come amid continuing political tensions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations concerning voter inclusion and deletion. Protesters are demanding accountability from the Election Commission of India, making the proposed gathering another flashpoint in the ongoing political dispute.
Delhi Police has reportedly denied permission for the proposed demonstration, citing prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Authorities are expected to maintain heightened vigilance at sensitive locations and along routes leading towards central Delhi. Security personnel are being deployed at strategic points, while barricades and monitoring arrangements are expected to regulate crowd movement and prevent unauthorised gatherings. Additional women security personnel are also being mobilised to manage the expected participation of female demonstrators.
The scale of the deployment has drawn comparisons with the extensive security arrangements made during US President Donald Trumps visit to India in February 2020. However, the circumstances surrounding the two events are different, with the present operation focused on managing a major political mobilisation. The proposed protest follows earlier demonstrations by opposition leaders and activists over the electoral-roll revision process. Protest organisers have raised concerns about transparency and the potential exclusion of eligible voters, while the Election Commissions procedures remain at the centre of the political debate.
The developments also highlight the challenge of balancing public order with the right to peaceful assembly. Authorities must manage potential disruptions and protect sensitive government locations, while the broader dispute raises questions about electoral transparency and public confidence in democratic institutions. With the proposed gathering approaching, commuters and residents have been advised to monitor official police and traffic updates before travelling through central Delhi. The size of the turnout, the enforcement of restrictions and the response from political leaders are likely to determine how the situation unfolds. The Jantar Mantar 2.0 mobilisation is expected to keep the electoral-roll controversy in the spotlight, with both the security arrangements and the protesters demands likely to draw significant attention in the coming days.
