Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over recent remarks he made in an interview with a social media influencer, where he acknowledged that humans, including himself, are prone to making mistakes and that he is not a "God." Ramesh sarcastically reminded the Prime Minister of his statements from a few months ago, where he had expressed a belief that God had sent him, calling the new comments a form of "damage control."
In his podcast conversation with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, Modi discussed the inherent fallibility of humans, including himself, and emphasized the importance of acting with good intentions, despite the mistakes people may make. He shared that when he became Chief Minister, he had declared that he would not shy away from hard work, would not act for personal gain, and would always strive to avoid wrongdoing. He further explained that his life's mantra was based on the idea that everyone, even the Prime Minister, is human and subject to errors but should never act with malice or bad intentions. Modi’s emphasis on idealism over ideology in politics was a key part of his discussion, acknowledging that while ideology is necessary, it is idealism that guides actions for the greater good.
The statement stirred controversy, particularly after Modi’s earlier comments in May 2024. In a TV interview, Modi had said that while he once thought his birth was a natural occurrence while his mother was alive, he now believed that his life and energy were given by a divine force. He expressed that after his mother’s death, he felt that God had sent him, reinforcing his belief that his energy came not from biology but from a divine source.
