India is expected to push for a long-term uranium supply agreement with Australia during Prime Minister Narendra Modis upcoming visit, as New Delhi looks to secure reliable fuel for its expanding civilian nuclear energy programme and strengthen strategic ties with Canberra. According to reports, the proposed commercial agreement has been under discussion for several years following the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed between India and Australia in 2014. Officials now believe the remaining technical hurdles have been resolved, raising expectations that both sides could finalize the deal during the high-level visit.

The agreement would enable Australia, one of the worlds largest uranium producers, to supply uranium exclusively for Indias civilian nuclear reactors under international safeguards. The move is aimed at supporting Indias growing electricity demand while advancing its clean energy goals. The expected pact comes at a time when India is expanding its nuclear power capacity to diversify its energy mix. With electricity consumption rising rapidly due to industrial growth, urbanisation, and increasing digital infrastructure such as data centres, the government has been exploring stable sources of nuclear fuel to ensure uninterrupted power generation.

Apart from energy cooperation, Prime Minister Modis visit is also expected to focus on strengthening defence collaboration, economic partnerships, and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The two countries have steadily expanded their relationship in recent years through initiatives covering trade, maritime security, critical minerals, and emerging technologies.

Australia views India as an important strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, while New Delhi considers Canberra a reliable partner in securing critical resources and enhancing regional stability. The proposed uranium agreement is expected to further deepen bilateral ties and open the door for greater collaboration in the energy sector. If signed, the deal would mark a significant milestone in India-Australia relations and provide a steady supply of uranium for Indias civilian nuclear programme, supporting the countrys long-term objective of expanding clean and dependable energy generation.
