India’s annual defence output has reached a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025–26, reflecting a 15.6% rise compared to the previous year’s ₹1.54 lakh crore and a 110% increase since FY 2020–21, according to the Ministry of Defence. The growth has been driven by expanded indigenous manufacturing, stronger private sector involvement, and rising defence exports.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the milestone, attributing it to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the combined efforts of all stakeholders in the defence ecosystem. In a post on X, he highlighted that India’s defence production is consistently reaching new highs under the vision of self-reliance through Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The ministry noted that production stood at ₹84,643 crore in FY 2020–21 and has grown significantly since then, while indigenous output has nearly quadrupled from ₹43,746 crore in FY 2013–14. Defence Public Sector Undertakings and other government entities contributed about 76% of total production in FY 2025–26, with the private sector accounting for 24%, its highest share so far at around ₹42,000 crore.
Defence exports also touched a record ₹38,424 crore during the year, underscoring India’s expanding global presence in defence manufacturing. The ministry said this sustained growth reflects the success of ongoing policy reforms, increased private participation, and strengthening export capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
