India and Indonesia on Saturday agreed to inject fresh energy into their bilateral relationship, with a particular focus on collaboration in defense manufacturing and supply chain development. The discussions took place during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wide-ranging talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who is on a three-day visit to India and will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday at Kartavya Path.
In a media statement, Modi highlighted Indonesia as a key partner for India within the ASEAN bloc and the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing both nations' shared commitment to a rules-based order. He stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, a pointed remark against the backdrop of China’s growing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.
The two leaders conducted in-depth discussions on various aspects of their partnership, agreeing to collaborate on defense manufacturing and supply chains. Modi also announced a newly signed agreement on maritime security, which aims to bolster cooperation in crime prevention, search and rescue operations, and capacity building.
Both sides discussed diversifying their trade basket and enhancing market access to deepen economic ties. They also committed to strengthening partnerships in areas like FinTech, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital public infrastructure. Further areas of cooperation include maritime and cyber security, counter-terrorism, and efforts to combat radicalization.
President Subianto described the discussions as candid and productive, expressing a strong desire to accelerate economic collaboration with India. Modi also welcomed Indonesia’s recent membership in BRICS, signaling deeper multilateral engagement between the two countries.
