India Eyes Hypersonic RVV-BD Missile Integration for Upgraded Su-30MKI

India is considering a major enhancement to its Su-30MKI fighter fleet through the proposed integration of the Russian-origin RVV-BD long-range air-to-air missile. The move is aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Forces ability to engage important aerial targets at extended distances and further improve the combat capabilities of one of its most widely deployed fighter platforms.
The RVV-BD is designed to engage high-value airborne targets at ranges of up to approximately 300 kilometres. The missile is also reported to reach speeds of close to Mach 6, giving it the potential to pose a serious threat to aircraft operating at significant distances from the battlefield. Its intended targets include airborne early warning and control aircraft, reconnaissance platforms and other support aircraft that are critical to modern air operations.
The proposal is being evaluated by the Defence Ministry and is expected to be discussed by the Defence Acquisition Council. The timing has also attracted attention because of the expected visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit. Several major defence and strategic agreements could be discussed during the visit, and the proposed RVV-BD integration may become part of broader defence cooperation between India and Russia.
Russia has developed different versions of the RVV-BD missile family, with an emphasis on engaging high-value aerial assets rather than only conventional fighter targets. Destroying or forcing such support aircraft away from the operational area can affect an opponents surveillance, command, communication and coordination capabilities, making long-range weapons of this type increasingly important in modern air warfare.
The potential acquisition comes as India continues to expand its air-to-air missile inventory through a combination of domestic development and international procurement. The Defence Research and Development Organisation is advancing the Astra missile family, including longer-range variants intended to provide the Indian Air Force with greater reach. At the same time, India has also pursued advanced foreign systems such as the European Meteor missile, allowing the IAF to operate a broader mix of air-to-air weapons.
The Su-30MKI remains the backbone of Indias fighter fleet, with more than 260 aircraft in service or planned within the fleet. The aircraft is undergoing a series of upgrades aimed at improving its radar, weapon integration, detection range and overall combat effectiveness. These improvements are particularly important as air warfare becomes increasingly dependent on long-range sensors, networked platforms and precision-guided weapons.
The Su-30MKI has already demonstrated its importance as a long-range strike platform. During Operation Sindoor, the fighter was employed in missions involving long-range air-to-ground weapons, including air-launched BrahMos cruise missiles and Rampage precision-guided weapons. Integrating the RVV-BD would add another dimension to the aircrafts capabilities by improving its potential to conduct long-range air-to-air engagements.
Beyond weapons integration, India is also examining plans to overhaul the Su-30MKIs airframes and AL-31 engines. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is expected to undertake a significant portion of this work, helping extend the service life of the existing fleet and improve aircraft availability. HAL is also likely to receive additional orders for Advanced Light Helicopter Mark 3 aircraft as part of Indias wider effort to strengthen its indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities.
The possible integration of the RVV-BD reflects Indias broader strategy of combining indigenous weapons development, foreign acquisitions and continuous upgrades to existing combat aircraft. If approved and successfully integrated, the missile could give the Su-30MKI an enhanced ability to threaten high-value aerial assets at extended ranges, further increasing the fighters importance within Indias future air combat strategy.
