India, Bangladesh Discuss Cultural Cooperation During Nazrul Borsho

India and Bangladesh have discussed ways to strengthen cultural cooperation, with classical music, folk traditions, heritage conservation and joint cultural programmes among the areas explored during a meeting in Dhaka. The discussions took place on Sunday between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladeshs Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury. Bangladesh State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khayyam also attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on expanding cultural exchanges between the two neighbouring countries and strengthening institutional cooperation in the cultural sector. The two sides discussed possibilities for organising joint programmes and conferences, as well as increasing collaboration involving artists, cultural organisations and researchers.

The talks assume particular significance as Bangladesh is observing Nazrul Borsho, a year-long celebration dedicated to the life and works of renowned Bengali poet and composer Kazi Nazrul Islam. Nazruls literary and musical legacy is closely connected with both Bangladesh and India, particularly the Bengali-speaking regions of the two countries. Known for his poetry, songs and writings on freedom, equality and social justice, Nazrul remains an important figure in the shared cultural heritage of India and Bangladesh. His works continue to be performed and studied on both sides of the border, making his legacy a natural platform for closer cultural engagement.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed cooperation in heritage conservation. Such collaboration could provide opportunities for experts and institutions from both countries to exchange knowledge and work together on preserving historical and cultural traditions. Indian officials also highlighted the scope for greater cooperation in areas such as folk culture and classical music. Cultural exchanges involving young artists and performers could further expand people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The discussions come as India and Bangladesh continue efforts to maintain engagement across several areas of their bilateral relationship. Cultural cooperation provides an avenue for strengthening ties at the people-to-people level through shared language, literature, music, art and history. With Nazrul Borsho continuing through 2027, the celebrations are expected to provide additional opportunities for cultural institutions, artists and researchers from India and Bangladesh to participate in programmes highlighting their common cultural heritage.
